Documentary Writing, Structure and Proposal Planning

While acknowledging the importance of observational documentary, this course is devoted to furthering the skills and craft of the narration based documentary. It will help you develop solid dynamic film structures and show you how to write winning proposals as well as excellent and entertaining integrated narration scripts.

The course will examine the structures and possibilities of working in and writing different forms of documentary, such as drama docs, bio-pics, and experimental docs. It will also look at the challenges of various kinds of documentaries from popular human interest stories, through to history and journalistic investigation documentaries.

Melbourne Indigenous Arts Festival

Prominent Indigenous writers and visual artists come together for a weekend of free public talks and performances as part of the inaugural Melbourne Indigenous Arts Festival.

Melbourne’s own Yorta Yorta woman, Kylie Belling, hosts some of Australia’s most talented story tellers at this session.

This talk celebrates Indigenous writing and the legacy and tradition of David Unaipon, Kevin Gilbert and Oodgeroo Noonuccal.

Guest Writers: Larissa Behrendt (Eualeyai and Kamillaroi/NSW), Richard Frankland (Gunditjmara/VIC), Tony Briggs (Yorta Yorta/VIC), Tjimba Possum Burns (Yorta Yorta and Ynugu, Lavitja, Majuta/VIC and NT) and Patrick Mau (aka Maupower)(Kala Kawaya/Torres Strait).

The speakers:
Miyuki Jokiranta is Founding Director of the art and sustainability festival ‘seven thousand oaks’, and is a radio maker, linguist and cultural researcher.
Martin Mulligan  is Director at RMIT Globalism Research Centre. In conducting research on the challenges facing local communities from Australia to Sri Lanka and India, he has  developed new ways of thinking about the sociology of community in the contemporary world and cultural adaptation to climate change at the level of local communities.
Katrine Vejby is Founding Festival director of co2penhagen, which began in 2010 and was powered entirely by pedal power. Prior to this she was a radio producer (BBC) and journalist.
Karen Blincoe is a graphic designer, environmentalist and educationalist. She is the founder and director of the ICIS Centre in Denmark, the recently established international centre for creativity, innovation and sustainability.  Karen is interested in human and environmental issues both professionally and privately (participating via skype).

Following short presentations by our 4 speakers you are invited to participate in a series of lively interactive round tables discussing questions such as:

in a world where we are required to reimagine all of our relationships what is the new role for artists?
what is the potential for relationships between artists and urban communities in rehearsing  and creating a sustainable future?
are there critical points in our cultural, social and economic systems that can be activated to enable systemic change? 
what can artists do that politicians can’t or won’t do?
how important is art and culture in motivating and activating behavior change?

Artist’s Sustainability Workshop – 22 Nov.

AbaF Victoria and CLIMARTE invite you to attend a one day, interactive workshop with Guy Abrahams, co-founder of CLIMARTE, to learn how to build sustainable art practices.
Sustainability and the Arts will raise awareness of the role the arts play in environmental sustainability, and explore how eco-friendly initiatives can be applied to artistic practices. Speakers include: Jen Rae, Artist and PhD candidate at RMIT University; Sarah Tomasetti, artist and lecturer at RMIT University; and Jack Manning, Associate at Net Balance.
