Focus on Art: Kitchen Owls

Robyn Stewardson makes quirky, assemblage sculpture owls from found metal objects… “They are one-offs, handmade from items that I buy from op shops, trash and treasure markets, scrounge from dumpsters, pick up from around picnic tables in parks, collect from friends. I use the occasional new metal washer but my creations evolve almost 100% from other people’s rejects. My owl making manages to fulfil a number of needs that I have: a creative urge and something to do for ME (I’m a stay at home mum of two gorgeous girls) as well as providing a new lease on life for numerous metal objects that have outlived their original purpose. I LOVE saving things from landfill!” Read the rest of this entry →

The Bondi Garage Sale Trail

May 9, 2010

It’s in the spirit of community and sustainability that Bondi Resident, Creative and sustainability Maven, Ben Peacock is curating the Garage Sale Trail as part of the Bondi Sizzle Community Festival. Bondi residents – fashionistas, creatives, travellers and riff-raff alike – are encouraged to participate in a suburb-wide garage sale.

While the iconic Australian garage sale may seem quite humble amid all the broader talk of sustainability, it remains a highly relevant way of consuming and creating responsibly to reduce the 3.2 million tonnes of solid waste sent to landfill each year.

There will also be a special artistic component to festival where artists can put their garage art on display.
