Louise Saxton: Sanctuary – Heide

March 24, 2012 in Art, Exhibition, Melbourne+VIC

Sanctuary is a series of beautiful, sculptural wall works created using reclaimed needlework pinned to tulle, and based on natural history illustrations. The artist, Louise Saxton painstakingly deconstructs vintage fabrics, embroidery and lace, and using elements from them creates intricate depictions of birds and insects by pinning layer after layer to tulle.

The journey of the fabrics is a transformative one, the final form a delicate, two-dimensional representation of the natural world.

Saturday 24 March -  29 July 2012. Heide Museum of Modern Art

Nobody was Dirty – NGV Studio

March 23, 2012 in Art, Exhibition, Melbourne+VIC

NGV StudioNobody was Dirty Curated by sustainable fashion researcher Tullia Jack, Nobody was Dirty dramatically recontextualises worn jeans to bring private smells into the public domain. Jack engaged thirty people to wear the same pair of jeans for three months without washing them in order to understand more about what motivates people to wash their clothes. Are our laundry practices based on sanitation standards, or cultural constructs that perpetuate germophobic mindsets? Decide for yourself at Nobody was Dirty, part of the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival Cultural Program. For all things Nobody was Dirty, visit: #ngvstudio, @ngv_melbourne and @TulliaJack via Twitter http://www.tulliajack.com

Exhibition on till the 1st of April. The Ian Potter Centre. NGV Melbourne
