David Berman is giving a passionate presentation on May 24th as part of agIdeas International Design Week in Melbourne, Australia about how we will together use design to create a better civilization! It’s a topic I care deeply about and I’ll have the pleasure of sharing ideas with some of the most creative people on the planet.

International Design Week runs from May 21-25 and David will be speaking on the 24th.

“If you can’t join us, please do keep this in mind: over 95% of the designers who have ever lived are alive today … what will we choose to do with the influence we hold? We could convince people to buy more things that they don’t need, or we can recognize that the world is our common design project. Just sayin’”

Following the lives of survivors of four different genocides and mass atrocities – The Holocaust, Rwanda, Darfur, and Congo – The Last Survivor presents a unique opportunity to learn from the lessons and mistakes of our past in order to have lasting social impact on how we act collectively in the face of similar issues today. BOOK ONLINE @ Bella Union

“Each Survivor’s story is one of triumph over trauma, and we hope that audiences respond to their courage and perseverance as much as we have. When we made the film, our objective was not to dwell on the tragedies of the past, but rather to understand how we can prevent atrocities in the future.” Michael Pertnoy, the film’s Co-Director

Having shot on location in five countries across four continents, the film asks its audience to consider genocide as an atrocity that has occurred on nearly every single continent and one that affects all of us as human beings. By presenting these stories of loss, survival, and hope side by side, the film highlights the commonalities these individuals share both as Survivors and, more broadly, as human beings.

“It is impossible not to be moved and inspired by what each of them has been able to accomplish despite the tragedies they have endured”

The screening coincides with Indigenous Remembrance Day (31st May) and to acknowledge Australia’s history of genocide, the event will open with an audio of the powerful and moving track ‘Land’ by Spoken Word Artist Joel McKerrow. Performance poet Sista Zai of the Stillwaters Storytelling Collective will also be there to perform a theme related poem created especially for this event.

Come along and witness stories of courage, survival and change and support the local organisations helping asylum seekers in our community. Representatives from Hotham Mission and The Asylum Seekers Resource Centre (ASRC), will be present to speak about the work they do to support refugees and how we can take action. Also find out what’s on during the upcoming Refugee Week in June including World Refugee Day Rally 17th June.
Anna Rose is co-founder and Chair of the Australian Youth Climate Coalition. Her new book Madlands: A Journey to Change the Mind of a Climate Sceptic tells the tale of her extraordinary journey with Liberal Party powerbroker Nick Minchin, which was also documented by ABC TV in the special I Can Change Your Mind About Climate. In our first Lunchbox/Soapbox for Programme Two, Anna discusses the rise of climate denialism both in Australia and globally, why the Australian media doesn’t discuss climate change rationally, what motivates the denialist elite – and how to change people’s minds!
